Artist Series 007 – Casey R. Klein
Process is a principle part of Klein’s paintings. After choosing the orientation of the work, she then applies thin pieces of artist tape to map a shape emulating that of a photograph or a view from a window. The negative space plays just as important a role as the painted elements throughout her bodies of work. Drawing from a consistent color palette, each pulled line takes on a persona of its own. Every coat is placed with the intention to enhance or mute the hue beneath. Organic curves and imperfections construct the topography of each piece and represent an array of sentiments, people, and places.
Conceptually, Klein considers color selection a key component to the voice of her work. She examines how colors naturally settle on paper to create singular forms and silhouettes. Using tools to both add and extract painted sections, she allows her work to continually evolve into its own character, building on an approachable and layered tonal expression. This expression stems from the way Klein has interacted with poetry throughout her life, aiming for the viewer to interpret and connect each layer to a personal feeling or idea.
This body of work is influenced by the malleability of memory; how it can fade and be altered over time. How our own stories begin to develop our past into what we want and think we know to be real. The intangible memories of our lives exist to create our personal history as we collect our truths which tend to be based solely on perspective. The series manipulates colors to show the progression of memory fading; using vibrant color to express vivid memory and then altering and fading the palette.
